Why teen parents should watch Euphoria

Why teen parents should watch 'euphoria'

Parenting teenagers is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Competing with the internet, accessible day and night, makes it  impossible to control what they are exposed to. As parents, it’s imperative that we have an open line of communication. Easier said than done, right? So, when a show like ‘Euphoria’ shows up, which opens a possible dialogue to ALL kinds of sensitive subjects ranging from mental health to drugs to porn, do not ignore it. Here is why I think every teen parent should watch ‘Euphoria’.

What is 'Euphoria'?

‘Euphoria’ is a 2019 HBO teen drama that has skyrocketed to 2.4 million viewers with its 2nd season. The story centers around high school kids, but unlike shows like ‘Gossip Girls’, delves so much deeper into issues that teens are currently experiencing. Although the situations are not always believable and appear sensationalized, the emotions are real, and that’s why so many people are obsessed with it. ‘Euphoria’s’ plot centers around the main character, Rue, who returns to school after spending her summer in rehab for a nearly fatal drug overdose. So, although our teens hopefully cannot relate to the addiction of drugs, they most likely can relate to the emptiness and depression that drove Rue down that path.

Today's teens are different

As much as I would like to say, “I was a teenager once too”, none of my generation can come close to understanding what today’s teens are going through. They are surrounded by an unfiltered constantly accessible internet.  60 to 70% of all interpersonal conversations and relationships exist through social media and text messaging. Anxiety and depression are at an all time high. This generation of teens live in a fast-paced world and have become numb to what I would consider shocking and edgy. There are mixed reviews from teens when asked if they felt ‘Euphoria’ was realistic.  Some say it’s over the top while others say the show creates an atmosphere which is all too familiar. What they all seem to agree on is ‘Euphoria’ examines real social habits and real emotions that plague the world of today’s teens.

What makes 'Euphoria' so popular?

The Cast of 'Euphoria'

Before the show was even released, fans became excited about it being linked to rapper and legend, Drake, who is the executive producer on the project. Layer on Zendaya as the main character (who started on the Disney Channel), and there was already a loyal following. The breakout stars are also  amazing with raw and emotional performances that have helped make the show feel so real. If you loved Jacob Elordi in ‘The Kissing Booth’, just wait until you see him now. The other actors worth mentioning are Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira, and Sidney Sweeney. When I read about how many of the scenes are done through improvisation versus being scripted, I gained even more respect for the show. The intensity is off the charts, and it truly allows you to step into a world you know nothing about.

Portrayal of real issues

The creator Sam Levinson says that many of the storylines on ‘Euphoria’ are based on real struggles he experienced firsthand. This show does not have your cringy teen stereotypes. The characters provoke real emotions. As a viewer you become invested and truly want them to have a better outcome. Some critics would say the heavy issues portrayed are made to look appealing, but I would argue the complete opposite.  These characters face consequences and I would much prefer my teen watch that play out on screen versus experience them firsthand.

The aesthetics

The costumes, makeup, and visuals in ‘Euphoria’ are amazing. TikTok and Pinterest have gone crazy trying to recreate the eyeshadow and outfits of the characters. Who knew that kindergarten overalls and animal backpacks could look that sexy?  The adventurous, edgy outfits these girls wear to school would have had us in detention by 2nd period. How does the main character  even make “tomboy” look chic? The eye makeup reminds me of the glow-in-the-dark stars I had on my bedroom ceiling. And there is so much glitter! It’s a whole unique visual identity and is another reason so many teens are obsessed with this show.

so how does 'Euphoria' help my teen?

In conclusion, it can certainly be argued that this show should not be watched by anyone under 17, but it can also open a much-needed dialogue between teens and parents. If your teen isn’t already watching it, they are hearing about it from their friends. It may at times be uncomfortable to watch, but these are real issues faced by our real teens. ‘Euphoria’ should be used as a resource to connect with your teen about what version of these topics they are facing. You might be horrified but you will also be enlightened. Your teens are being exposed to these explicit topics whether you like it or not, so it’s our job to be aware and knowledgeable about them as well.
