Boy Room Redo

We dropped him off at college. He’ll be home for breaks and probably for the first summer, but what do we do with his room? In our last house, I probably would have left it alone, but in our downsized house it needed to be multi functional. Looks like it’s time for a boy room redo! In the end this would be a guest room as well as a boy room.

The most important things that Cullen left behind were his guitars and keyboard. The theme of the room would need to be around those. Starting with the bedding, I found a neutral duvet that would work with the denim sofa.  I layered onto that with throw pillows (you will learn that I’m obsessed with throw pillows). The pillows also had color and texture to what would have been a really boring bed.

I picked a deep orange as a POP color and pulled it together with a throw and a pillow. There is no other orange in the room but that doesn’t matter. I topped it off with a the “cassette pillow” which was from his original room and tied back to the theme.

The denim couch was from the old room so those covers all got removed and washed. I experimented, but for some reason it worked best at a slight angle then pressed up against the wall and windows. That gave me enough space to keep the floor lamp behind it. I added on more throw pillows (surprise!) which tied back in the duvet color and added texture. The cow print pouf was just a fun item I found on sale at Bed Bath & Beyond to add interest.  Of course it’s functional as a foot stool too!

Next came the walls. He took several things to college that were there before. Behind the bed he had a a tapestry with LED lights which was great for a boy room but didn’t really translate into a guest room. I searched music and guitar prints and came up with ideas that would work together. The focal point is a 4 piece guitar canvas I found at Elephant Stock (see picture at the top of the page). You can order canvas prints there in different dimensions depending on the space you are trying to fill.  I found a great black and white canvas at ICanvas with a picture of a Nashville music venue that was perfect for behind the couch. Finally, I ordered some black and white prints from Etsy and framed them in some cheap frames from Michaels. Several of his guitars were already hanging on the wall which filled up the rest of the space.

Black and white canvas from ICanvas.

Photo prints from Etsy. Frames from Michaels with built in mattes. They seem like they are 50% off every other week.

Guitars hanging on the wall. You can easily do this with hooks. They have a 2 pack for under $10 at amazon.

The last touches included 2 retro nightstands in black from Belk and  two small lamps from At Home. I found a wood tray, music figurine, candle, and hour glass at Marshalls. Shopping for the accessory layer is always my favorite part! I had one more space that seemed bare on the wall so I bought some cheap records from Goodwill and put some black and white photos of Cullen playing guitar in the center.

Boy Room redo part 2- the bathroom

Warmth

Even though there were shower doors, I added a tension rod above it and hung a colorful shower curtain.

Color

Found prints on Etsy that I could frame myself. They pick up all the colors in the shower curtain.

Function

Bought an inexpensive rolling cart at Marshalls that added color and functionality.
